Mental Health, Counseling and Personal Wholeness:

A deeper understanding.

[Return to Mental Health, Counseling and Personal Wholeness]

My years of study of scientific Naturopathic Medicine, homeopathy, acumeridian theory and many systems of whole-person healing often help me solve puzzling conditions. A common thread in my assessments and treatments is my goal of restoring your body's Autonomic Nervous System self-regulation. I have more information on this at these links: 1. Models of ANS Dysregulation;  2. Obstacles to Cure / ANS Function Factors;  and the general Philosophy of Health & Medicine. Also see: The Expanded Paradigm.

Note: ANS function can be affected by Diseases that can be cured by the Complete Medical System of "Heilkunst" homeopathy. So, I may recommend that patients consider this as part of an overall program. See: Homeopathy Science.

The Healing Process: How it feels to be healing, comments on the process.

Spirituality Considerations: No matter what one's "religion": Atheism, Ethical Humanism, or one of the World Religions, it is important to consider one's place in the worldwide community of human beings. See Distant Healing, Prayer/Energy Healing.

Below are some references to shortcomings of the current western allopathic model when applied to the area of mental health. These are followed by approaches to help the mind that are not centered on use of prescription medications, but aim more to restore the person's innate balance in other ways.

Remember: We do  not know everything about the brain--This article shows new structure in the brain's organization, "Microcolumns" are important clue to more intricate development of our neural structure (beyond the Alzheimer's-related funding source, this is crucial information about how complex we are).

Beyond Standard Psychiatry: Approaches to Consider:

Brain Science: Study of the brain with PET scans shows difference between male and female. Science writer Michael Gurian's What Could He be Thinking?

Chemical Brain Injury: Classical text by Kaye H. Kilburn, M.D.

Nutrition and Orthomolecular concept:

        Dr. Abram Hoffer's work

Well Mind Association, Seattle, WA. [I was on Board of Directors.]

At NIHA, Dr. Charles Gant, M.D., specializes in the orthomolecular approach.

Nutritional Healing: A resource for Nutritional Medicine. An excellent website by a dedicated nutrition student in Australia. This was shared with the group at the Integrative Psychiatry email forum.

Treating Toxins to Treat Mind and Body: The work of William Rea, M.D.

Detoxify or Die: An excellent book by Sherry Rogers, M.D.

MSG and Brain Chemistry: A toxin with many effects, is in many foods (list given). Promoted by US Government in "Cheeseburger Bill."

Psychiatric Effects of Air Pollution: This is what Dr. Rea is warning about.

Bioaccumulation: Buildup of toxins from environmental sources

Mold and Brain Effects.

Microbes [Lyme] and Brain/Body Effects.

Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia: Related to bio-toxins.

Exercise / Bodywork / Yoga:  Helps body energy flow, changes neurotransmitters.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy: Somato-Emotional Release as well as general help.

Emotions and Brain Biochemistry: Interview with Dr. Candace Pert

Ayurvedic Medicine: With body type constitutions related to personality.

Acumeridian Therapies: Including the Five-Element relationships to personality, this refers to a fast-growing selection of different approaches to helping the mind and body such as EMDR and "tapping therapies".

Homeopathy: This has a major focus on personality, and behavior.

Impossible Cure: The Promise of Homeopathy: A mother describes her

son's cure from autism in this book [from Dr. Mercola's web site].

Iris Analysis: Iris structure has been related to personality and behavior.

Applied Psycho-Neurobiology (APN): Combines acumeridians, color, eye movement [related to EMDR] and more.

Eye Movement Therapies: Klinghardt's APN and others stem from work in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and subsequent discoveries. "In the times when astute observers were beginning to investigate the influence of mental processes on the movements of the eyes (NLP), Francine Shapiro did the reverse; she made the serendipitous discovery that movements of the eyes could affect mental processes." Several ways of using eye movements in mind-body work have been developed.

Polyvagal Theory: Phylogenetic Substrates of a Social Nervous System. Stephen Porges, Ph.D. Klinghardt says it explains his work's success.

Peer Support to Enhance Personal Wholeness: This can be a powerful part of a person's overall program to support health of body and mind.

"Synchronicity": Swiss Psychologist Carl Gustav Jung coined the term synchronicity to signify "the simultaneous occurrence of two meaningful but not causally connected events," or as "a coincidence in time of two or more casually unrelated events which have the same or similar meaning... equal in rank to a causality as a principle of explanation." This can be a starting point to self-understanding using a variety of thought-encouraging approaches such as the I-Ching, which Jung often used.

The Reverse Speech Phenomenon: A fascinating new window on how the body and the mind interact. This has been applauded as a breakthrough in psychology and the ability to work with the inner understandings of an individual. You can decide for yourself what you want to do with this information.
